Summary:

A study by Ronan Factora MD explored the effectiveness of virtual capacity evaluations in collaboration between Geriatricians at the Cleveland Clinic and Cuyahoga County Adult Protective Services (APS) from May 2020 to September 2021. Data from 54 individuals assessed included cognitive function, medication review, and identification of abuse types. Results showed that neglect and self-neglect were the most common abuse allegations, with a significant number of evaluations resulting in the assignment of guardians or conservators. The study highlighted the importance of reconnecting APS clients to routine medical care, which improved health outcomes and reduced social isolation. Virtual evaluations were found feasible and beneficial in maintaining individuals’ independence. The study suggested further research into the long-term impact, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of such collaborations, and emphasized the need for ongoing support and resources for sustainable implementation.
